The 2024 Southwest Monsoon season has concluded on a positive note for Andhra Pradesh, with the state receiving a 21% surplus rainfall. During the monsoon, the state recorded 629.2 mm of rainfall, exceeding the normal of 521.6 mm. This marks a major improvement over the previous year, which saw a 13% rainfall deficit.

Rainfall Distribution Across the State

Out of the 26 districts in Andhra Pradesh, 17 districts reported surplus rainfall, while the remaining 9 districts recorded normal rainfall levels. Among the top performers, Guntur district recorded the highest surplus, with 58% more rainfall, amounting to 939.4 mm, compared to the normal 594.9 mm.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted above-average rainfall this year, and their forecast proved accurate with the monsoon’s timely arrival. However, heavy rains in September caused severe flooding in Vijayawada and Kakinada, disrupting daily life for more than 10 days. This event contrasts with the drier-than-usual August of the previous year, which was recorded as the warmest and driest month in the IMD’s history since 1901.

Key Rainfall Figures from Districts

After Guntur, Anakapalle district in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh received a substantial surplus of 54%, with 996.7 mm of rainfall, against its normal of 648.5 mm. Other districts such as Visakhapatnam, West Godavari, Eluru, NTR, Sri Satya Sai, Nandyal, and Anantapur also saw significant rainfall surpluses.

On the other hand, YSR district recorded the lowest surplus rainfall, while Chittoor, Annamaya, and Nellore saw rainfall surpluses of less than 10%.

Anantapur’s Remarkable Turnaround

Anantapur, which faced a 34% deficit rainfall last year, saw a significant shift in 2024, registering a 34% surplus this monsoon. This drastic improvement is a testament to the favorable monsoon conditions that benefited the region.

Conclusion

The 2024 Southwest Monsoon has been a season of positive outcomes for Andhra Pradesh, bringing surplus rainfall, benefiting agriculture, and replenishing critical water resources. While localized flooding posed challenges, the state managed to avoid any districts facing deficit rainfall. With the monsoon season wrapping up on a high note, Andhra Pradesh is poised for a successful rabi season, bolstered by improved water levels and agricultural prospects.
